Somewhere in a mostly contemporary L.A., two service robots are falling in love. This is the setting for famed music video and Where the Wild Things Are director Spike Jonze’s new film I’m Here. Based on Shel Silverstein’s The Giving Tree, I’m Here follows the story of two robots that fall in love at a dangerous price. Jonze’s music choices are impeccable and not only help illustrate the story, but are in fact an indelible part of the film. Diving deep into the melancholy of what makes our souls both restless and in love with love, Jonze comes up with the correct prescription of indie rock to feed that hunger.
The nine song soundtrack features a mix of previously released songs by Animal Collective, Sleigh Bells and Gui Boratto and a score by Sam Spiegel (Spike Jonze’s younger brother, also known as Squeak E. Clean). The real heart of the album, though, comes from the new tracks by the Lost Trees, a collaboration between the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s Nick Zinner, Flea, and Aska Matsumiya. The result is a haunting, beautiful traipse into lust, longing, and loneliness.
