There is a fine line between evocative and plain old nostalgic, and with Bright Bright Bright, Dark Dark Dark continues to steer a course on the right side of that line. The sextet (with members from New York, New Orleans, and Minneapolis) carved out a niche of ornate songs, unique vocals, and a liberal use of old-fashioned instruments on its 2008 debut, The Snow Magic. A subsequent 7-inch remix (including songs deconstructed by Dosh and Odd Nosdam) brought to the surface the previously unknown possibilities of the songs. Bright Bright Bright not only continues that trend, but also makes the anticipation for the band’s sophomore full-length, due out late this year, even more exciting.
Bright Bright Bright is more than just an accordion-tinged throwback to a bygone musical era. While earlier material was more theatrical, even sometimes bordering on baroque, this EP appeals in a subtler manner. The haunting piano melodies and repetitive lyrics of the title track and “Something for Myself” evoke the best and most epically gloomy-but-beautiful Black Heart Procession songs. The palpable ache (with a touch of hopefulness) in singer Nona Invie’s voice, extraordinary harmonies, and understated horns only add to what is essentially a sad record. But it’s the sort of sweet, subdued sadness that is safe and almost comforting—and the accordion is just the icing on the cake.
