Add a pinch of jazz into a musical pot of folk and pop bubbling up with a little bossa nova and a pinch of country — with just a sprig of Old English balladry — and you have a nice harmonic soup called the Horse’s Ha. Give their new album, Of the Cathmawr Yards a taste and you’ll be enjoying its quiet subtleties.
Formed in 2002 by British ex-pat James Elkington (the Zincs) and American Janet Beveridge Bean (Freakwater), the Horse’s Ha came to fruition in musically rich Chicago and, collaborating with Chicago locals Fred Lonberg-Holm, Nick Macri, and Charles Rumback, the band grew into a dark, fantastical, genre-bending group.
Named for a Dylan Thomas short story about zombies, Cathmawr Yards’ sound is reminiscent of a melancholic She & Him, or maybe a folksy Arthur & Yu, and will sit nice on your musical palette.
