Hallelujah for Immaculate Machine’s unpolished fourth album, High On Jackson Hill, daringly recorded in the rough at songwriter Brooke Gallupe’s parents’ empty Canadian abode.
You can expect all the same crowd-pleasing and contagious melodies from the band’s debut, but this time around it’s subtle distortions between those classic rock riffs and thumping drums that really make the harmonic changes stand out. Add raw vocals from all three members and clever, catchy lyrics and you have a shining example of the kind of musical explorations Canadian artists are becoming increasingly more famous for making — fans of Sam Roberts and Arcade Fire take note.
Whether Immaculate Machine is really rocking out, as in “Don’t Build the Bridge” or “Sound the Alarms,” or finding poetry in the ballad “I Know It’s Not Easy,” this band from quiet Victoria, British Columbia has proven that it can make some impressive noise beyond borders.
