Reputations are like shadows — intangible followers that are hard to shake. The Von Bondies are usually linked to two entities they have little in common with anymore: Jack White and gritty Detroit garage rock.
Since their raw, bluesy debut, Lack of Communication, The Von Bondies have weathered numerous line-up changes, Stollsteimer’s much publicized tussle with Jack White, and a major label signing and departure. Four years after Pawn Shoppe Heart, Love, Hate, and Then There’s You follows that foray into even poppier territory.
The thrilling and bombastic drumbeat opening of “This is Our Perfect Crime” quickly establishes the record’s driving pace. Stollsteimer’s got a knack for writing hooks and choruses that beg you to sing along. “Pale Bride” unapologetically boasts power chords and Stollsteimer’s sneering chorus “I don’t care anymore” is full of rocknroll swagger. Guitar-based verse-chorus-verse, with plenty of boy-girl harmonizing, the album is easily digestible and not completely distinguishable from other pop rock crowding the airwaves. No matter, writing catchy, accessible pop songs certainly takes talent, and this album delivers on the radio-friendly goods.
