It seems an interesting premise: a Belgian couple sings in French under a Spanish moniker. Frankly, it’s the kind of thing that screams gimmick; an oh-too-cute move — saccharine, untrustworthy — akin to a band changing its name before every show. It shouldn't pass the smell test.
But damn it, it sure does.
Les Heures de Raison, the debut album from Soy Un Caballo, is picture perfect pop: backward glancing without dwelling, quiet without being sheepish, full of grace but not without taking a few risks.
The duo — consisting of Aurélie Muller and Thomas Van Cottom (with some help from Sean O'Hagan and Will Oldham, among others) — crafts delicate and sophisticated soundscapes, adding vocals that range from moody to carefree, spirited to downright moving. Songs like “Volet” and “La Chambre” (featuring Oldham) tug at heartstrings and dare us to feel no pain while “Robin” and “Passer des Jours” are more upbeat attempts at ill-content.
What sets this album apart from other dreamy Francophone pop outings is its mix. The production value on Les Heures de Raison is outstanding. A true stereo record with real deal hard panning: lush, alive in sound, and ever more haunting.
If Les Heures de Raison is any indication, Soy Un Caballo is poised to have a wonderful career filled with exciting musical outings. All of the ingredients to be a perennial favorite.
