The Faint has always been one step ahead of the retro-revivalist rabble, and now, with a new studio, their own label, and complete creative control, you’d think they’d pull away from the dance-punk pack. But on their latest album, Fasciinatiion (blank.wav), the Omaha new new wavers fall into an old old musical trap: overdub overkill — a claustrophobia-inducing barrage of bleeps and bloops and video-game vomit that covers up any sense of a song and comes off like too many ideas run amok.
