The volume at Chicago's Metro was maxxed when Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Band of Skulls brought their complementary blend of dirty garage rock and blues-tinged harmonies for a highly-anticipated sold-out show.
Britain's Band of Skulls opened the show, riding high on the success of last year's debut (and one of my top 10 of 2009) Baby Darling Doll Face Honey (Shangri-La), that features seriously addicting choruses and White Stripes–esque riffs on tracks like "Death by Diamonds and Pearls" and the bold ballad, "Honest."
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, now L.A.-based, brought to the stage an impressive ten-year tenure and new drummer Leah Shapiro (formerly of the Raveonettes) who perfectly matched the grit of her high-octane brothers in the band. BRMC's classic rock is the kind of yesteryear stadiums, fitting of their leather apparel and a name that's derived from a Marlon Brando movie. Although offering a catalogue of winsome songs, the band delivered on its latest, and six studio album, Beat the Devil's Tattoo (Vagrant). Whiny indie bands, take notice—this is what real concerts are made of.
