Zowie: From Pixie to Pop Princess

Persistence is key according to 22 year-old futuristic synth-pop songstress Zoe “Zowie” Fleury. A student of contemporary music, Fleury admits that at first she thought of her pop endeavor as a joke. “I mucked around,” she says, about her earliest attempts at pop music, creating over-the-top rap songs with crazy drum rhythms. As her confidence in her music grew Fleury began staying up all night to write, completing a track every two days. She self managed her way to airplay on national radio and has opened for The Kills and Peaches.

A naturally charismatic and energetic performer, Fleury believes music is in her genes and looks up to her father, also a musician, who has greatly inspired her own unique style. At first Fleury performed as  Ziggy Stardust inspired alterego “Bionic Pixie,” which eventually morphed into “Zowie”.

Zowie’s music is an eclectic mix of inspiration ranging from Grace Jones, Nine Inch Nails, M.I.A, Perfume and lots of J-Pop. Fluery says that most of her songs have double meanings and that she often forgets the way she initially felt when jotting down lyrics. One thing she is certain of is that her lyrics will be about situations and experiences that are relatable. “Because” she exclaims, excitedly “I think it’s really cool when you’re at show and you hear a song and you’re like yeah, I know what you’re talking about”.

Zowie’s first single “Broken Machine” was released in the fall of 2010. A full-length album on Sony Records is soon to follow in the spring of 2011. While the title has yet to be revealed Fleury promises an exciting mix of tunes co-written with mysterious group of collaborators from all over the globe from varied genres.
