Simple, yes, but is it chic?

Chic and Simple Sewing is for the woman who wants unique clothes at a low cost, without the trouble of learning sewing fundamentals.

Chic and Simple Sewing is a sewing tutorial for those who don’t actually want to sew. It begins with the most basic of instructions on sewing machine operation and sizing, and proceeds with twenty-three clothing projects that range from shapeless to having potential.

There are a few standout pieces – the Opera Dress is a particularly fetching sleeveless kimono-style dress, but it’s difficult to say if its appeal is the actual design, or the attractive red and white silk it’s made of. And there are some good basics to have in your sewing repertoire, such as a baby doll top that is cute as well as current, and the classic wrap-dress. The majority of the projects are unremarkable and shapeless, like the Retro Shift Dress and a rain trench without any belt or closure, rendered useless if your rainy day comes coupled with the slightest breeze. The midriff-baring Wrap Top is particularly unappealing; my gut tells me this piece would refuse to fit well, leaving the unfortunate wearer uncomfortably tugging at it.

The majority of the pieces are saved by virtue of enticing fabric choice, and given shape with easy tricks like belts or ties. All the clothes beg to be embellished in some way as the forms themselves are exceedingly simplistic. Overall, refinement is the crucial aspect missing from these designs. The edging on all the pieces looks sloppy – is it too much to teach an invisible stitch? The lack of attention to detail, and general lack of tailoring, results in every piece looking homemade. Which is fine if that’s the look you’re going for, but know that these are not boutique-ready pieces.

The introduction is very telling as to the merits and weaknesses of this book. Designer Christine Haynes began her sewing career as a youth in Michigan, frustrated with fit and tailoring, avoiding zippers when possible. She declares she’s “been successfully avoiding these details my whole life, and I can help guide you to do the same…” In my opinion, that’s nothing to brag about. The reason I seek out sewing instruction is to learn these important details and refine my sewing. That being said, I could see many less craft-savvy friends benefiting from this book. I would only recommend this book for a beginner, someone with a lust for individual style but without the patience or ambition to create Project Runway-esque pieces.
