Novice and professional crafters alike will find lip-bitingly bizarre and wildly wonderful projects in Amy Spencer’s new book, The Crafter Culture Handbook (Marion Boyars).
With about 50 projects designed by red-carpet crafters, the book demonstrates with whimsical graphics and in-house photos some of the more inventive craft projects on the market today, like the Nintendo Controller Optical Mouse. Enjoy these two recipes from the chapter on “Homemade Beauty.”

BATH FIZZIES
MATERIALS
• 2 cups baking soda
• 1 cup citric acid
• .7 ounces of oil of choice
• .25 ounces of fragrance oil
• 5 sprays of witch hazel
DIRECTIONS
1. Mix baking soda and citric acid in a bowl. Add the oils and mix. Spray with witch hazel, one spray at a time, until mixture holds together. Don’t spray too much or the citric acid will begin to fizz prematurely.
2. Fill molds of choice (soap molds or small, empty, washed-out food containers work well), packing mixture in firmly. Allow to dry a few minutes, pop out of the mold, then allow to dry for 24 hours.
3. Wrap and package as desired.
