Laura Marie Braun Loves Sassy Gay Friend

The gay best friend (or, GBF, if you will) has been an important part of pop culture for quite a while now. Grace had Will, Carrie had Stanford, and even Betty and Veronica have welcomed a gay character into Riverdale High.

Still, the GBF wasn’t always as welcome on the scene. Thank God for The Second City Network, who are making us realize how much the right type of confidant could have altered history. The celebrated comedy troupe has put together a series of YouTube video sketches featuring the character Sassy Gay Friend, a witty, fashionable gentleman (played by actor Brian Gallivan) who steps into famously bad situations to set his female friends back on track.

Sassy Gay Friend has rescued an array of literary ladies with his wise words including Ophelia from Hamlet (“There is something rotten in Denmark and it’s [Hamlet’s] piss poor attitude!”), Juliet from Romeo & Juliet (“You took a roofie from a priest!”) and, yes, The Giving Tree herself (“This is turning into a snuff film! You’re gonna end up a stump!”), whom he sets up with Boo Radley—“a man who can appreciate a tree.”

Sassy Gay Friend intervenes with his signature line, “What, what, WHAT are you doing?” as Shakespearean ladies and the like approach their own deaths or tiptoe on the verge of making terrible decisions. After he issues his wake up call, he and his pal frolic off together to go shopping or pick up cute boys. Not only are these videos absolutely hysterical, they’re a great homage to the wonderful sassy gay friends in all of our lives.
