It’s not too hard to make me laugh. Lots of things tickle my funny bone. Pratfalls? Check. Mad Libs? Check. LOLcats? Double check. But what gets me falling-out-of-my-chair, rolling-on-the-floor, in-danger-of-peeing-my-pants laughing is following Feminist Hulk (@feministhulk) on Twitter.
You know the Hulk—he’s that angry green guy with the awful purple shorts. He’s also, it turns out, a big time feminist. Each all-caps update ("BIG HULK FINGERS MAKE SHIFT-KEY PROBLEMATIC”) is a mini lesson in gender normativity, institutionalized patriarchy, and the state of the modern feminist community.
I love how Feminist Hulk is unabashedly proud of his feminism in a time where many women (let alone muscle-bound superheroes) treat "feminist" like a dirty word. This Twitter feed appeals to me on multiple levels, all of them nerdy. Can you blame me? He’s a comic book hero tweeting about feminism! It’s a fresh concept, executed with just the right tone: cute, smart, quirky, and never didactic or preachy. I’m always excited to see what Hulk will smash next!
