'The Private Lives of Pippa Lee' review

Directed by Rebecca Miller

After the poetic narratives of Personal Velocity and The Ballad of Jack and Rose, writer-director Rebecca Miller (daughter of playwright Arthur Miller and spouse to Academy-Award winner Daniel Day-Lewis) returns with The Private Lives of Pippa Lee. The film is another quasi-dark, indie gem that trails on the thematic outskirts of similar dramedies, such as Junebug and Lymelife.

What appears to have become her signature, Miller continues to helm — in masterly form — notable ensemble pieces with redefining performances. Robin Wright Penn stars as Pippa Lee, a content wife and mother who reflects on her turbulent youth and subsequently experiences a “quiet nervous breakdown.” Pleasantly appearing in key supporting roles is an impressive bill that includes Alan Arkin, Keanu Reeves, Maria Bello, Winona Ryder, Monica Bellucci, Julianne Moore, and in a breakout performance as a young Pippa Lee, Blake Lively.

The Private Lives of Pippa Lee navigates between past and present while showcasing multi-faceted portraits of ordinary people through Pippa’s reflections and introspections. -- Marcell Minaya
