What's On: Sarah Haskins  Issue #38 Issue #38

The creator and star of Current TV’s “Target Women” on books vs. films, media aimed at women, and having fun at work.

Witty and delightfully goofy at the same time, Sarah Haskins has been charming the pants off various lady bloggers for the past year, thanks in large part to her Current TV show “Target Women,” a spot-on satire of shows and commercials aimed at the fairer sex. Haskins was inspired to create the show after being bombarded with yogurt commercials during an episode of “Secret Life of a Soccer Mom.” We caught up with the 29-year-old Chicago native at her new home in L.A. (where she’s currently performing improv and working on a screenplay) to find out about the chick flicks she does like, her favorite bits to shoot, and her thoughts on the word “comedienne.”

VZ: What are your favorite chick shows to hate?

“I think “The Hills” is either a wry satire about the devolution of the English language, or just really depressing.”

VZ: Which “Target Women” was your favorite to produce?

Cleaning was really fun. I like to go out of the studio and film bits. Dylan Osborn, the editor of all the “Target Womens,” and I went to my house and spent about 15 minutes filming me in the shower in a business casual outfit.”

VZ: What are your top five favorite films?

“Uh, I am horrible at movie favorites. So, here are five movies I’ve watched recently because I love them: Y Tu Mama Tambien, the original Batman, Field of Dreams, Sunset Boulevard, and Hot Fuzz.”

VZ: Any examples of media aimed at women that you like?

“I’m not a total scold — I like a lot of the media aimed at women, while simultaneously [I know] some of it is stupid. Things I like: Mean Girls, When Harry Met Sally, Legally Blonde, Jane Austen adaptations, Gossip Girl, Michael Phelps.”

VZ: Who are your top five favorite bands/musicians at the moment?

“The Supremes, Voxtrot, the Raconteurs, Brother Ali, Kid Sampson.”

VZ: Which comedians do you see as role models?

“Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.”

VZ: How do you feel about the word ‘comedienne?’

“I prefer to be called a ‘lady of the night.’”
