Healthy Fast Food  Issue #38 Issue #38

Alternative healthy restaurants challenge the perception of fast food

When people think “fast food,” artery-clogging double cheeseburgers, super sizes, and numbered combo meals usually come to mind. But now there’s a promising trend emerging across our increasingly obese, drive-thru-loving country: Healthy fast food restaurants.

While these businesses maintain the same get-in-get-out attitude, they find healthy and environmentally responsible ways to serve up our fast food, from locally-grown food items on the menu to eco-friendly cleaning supplies in the bathrooms. Jack Graves, the chief cultural officer at Burgerville — a burger joint in the Pacific Northwest — thinks the recent fad is a response to consumer demand. “More people are looking for locally purchased and seasonal menu items nowadays,” he says. But what will happen when these friendly neighborhood hot spots make it big? “The key is that companies must be able to stay local when going national,” Graves says — and that’s a tall order.

In the meantime, check out these mouth-wateringly unconventional drive-thrus before the word gets out:
