The Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis presents the first museum survey of Belgium-born video artist Chantal Akerman. The hyperrealist director completed her first film in 1968 and now has more than 25 films to her credit. Featuring five single and multi-channel pieces that span decades and continents from Mexico to Israel, the exhibit highlights Akerman’s trademark combinations of filmmaking and video installation.
Notably on display is Akerman’s newest two-channel video installation, Femmes d’Anvers en Novembre (Women from Antwerp in November), which alternates between black and white and color, and shows women smoking in various unidentifiable settings; and the artist’s silent depiction of Eastern European countries post Cold War in D’est: Au bord de la fiction (From the East: Bordering on Fiction).
The exhibit runs through August 2, 2009. (contemporarystl.org)
